The Customized Patient Instrument program brings a new level of personalized TKR surgery allowing surgeons to work with knee cutting guides individually prepared to match alignment criteria and actual bone surfaces of each patient. Why custom fit knee replacement?
Recent studies and our own experience of more than 2000 Joint Replacements done so far have shown that no two knees are exactly alike. There are individual variations in sizing, shapes and extent and kind of damage involved, so process involves 3-D image of implant to be used in the patient's surgery to be Shape-Matched to anatomically correct virtual knee model. This helps determine correct implant size and placement, based on patient's own knee anatomy. Using all of this information, patient-specific cutting guides are created which are accurate to within a few millimeters. This makes exact indication for surgeon showing him the points to cut bones exactly from, so that knee replacement is customized for individual patient. Even patient name, gender and site data are etched on each packing to confirm identification during the surgery thus making it truly personalized. Right from clinical assessment and diagnosis , the procedure aims to bring patients back on their feet faster. It would take around 4 to 6 weeks to get custom patient specific instrumentation to be available to hospital for surgery and would be available at an add on costing compared to a conventional total knee replacement.
